Storyboards

What is a Storyboard?

A storyboard is a visual and textual document that describes a typical usage scenario of the interface.

A technique borrowed from the film industry, the storyboard steps each major interaction between the users and the system. Speech bubbles deliver dialogue between the users, while thought bubbles reveal inner states.

What are the Benefits of Storyboarding?

The main benefits of storyboarding is that it visually shows how the interface will behave in response to specific user input, in the context of a particular user journey through the system.

If the scenarios or user journeys are well chosen, then the advantages are greater. These include:

  • Helps stakeholders to visualize an experience
  • More meaningful than text documents of flowcharts for conveying the user experience.
  • Encourages early-stage design feedback
  • Can incorporate and complement any wireframes, personas and scenarios that have been developed
